A notice from the Commerce Department on Friday indicated that the United States might introduce import duties on commercial airplanes, jet engines, and associated components. This action has the potential to considerably affect Japanese and other international producers.
According to the notification published in the Federal Register, the department has launched an inquiry into the importation of commercial airplanes, jet engines, and related components due to concerns over national security.
The investigation initiated on May 1 under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 will concentrate on assessing whether U.S. demand can be fulfilled through domestic manufacturing capabilities and examining the influence of international supply chains.
According to that part of the legislation, the administration under President Donald Trump has implemented industry-specific tariffs, such as those on autos and steel, arguing that the present volume of imports threatens U.S. national security.
Officials from the Trump administration have mentioned that they might be looking into implementing import duties on critical industries like semiconductors and pharmaceuticals.
