The era comes to a close for Stuart's leading police officer.
The Stuart Police Department (SPD) reported on Friday that Chief Joseph Tumminelli will be retiring after serving for 28 years.
“I wish to express my gratitude to each of you for the support throughout this extensive journey within the police department, along with my counterpart at the county level and Special Units Chief John Bundensiek. May God bless all of you. Best wishes to everyone pursuing this career,” stated Tumminelli.
Tumminelli has been associated with the Stuart Police Department since October 2018. Throughout his almost three-decade tenure at the police department, he has worked across all units, providing his insight, empathy, and dedication to each position, as stated in a Facebook post by the Stuart Police.
"His guidance has made an unforgettable impact not only within our department but throughout the entire City of Stuart," stated SPD in their Facebook post.

The police department stated that Chief Tumminelli will be remembered fondly by both the residents of Fort Pierce and the law enforcement team. They added that his impact will endure through the stringent benchmarks he established, the connections he forged, and the community he safeguarded and empowered.
Throughout his time as chief, CBS12 News has spoken with him numerous times to discuss investigations. Most recently CBS12 News spoke with him about an officer-involved shooting late March. That led to the death of a knife-wielding suspect accused of threatening others at a Stuart condo complex.
City Manager Michael Mortell has declared that Flamur Zenelovic will assume leadership of the department as the upcoming chief of police.
Mortell mentioned that Zenelovic served as a detective in Stuart starting from the mid-1990s for about eight years. Afterward, he moved to the Rochester Police Department in New York where he stayed for around twenty years. In 2023, Zenelovic came back as a support services captain.
Zenelovic will take over responsibilities beginning on Saturday.
