Ongoing storm assessments are taking place following the devastating storms that struck parts of southern Kentucky, causing widespread damage throughout multiple towns.
The National Weather Service office in Jackson, Kentucky began assessing damage in sections of Pulaski County on Saturday near Somerset. They reported possible EF-2 tornado wind damage and possibly even some areas with lower end EF-3 damage. Winds classified as EF-2 sustain speeds between 111-135 mph, whereas EF-3 winds range from 136-165 mph.
Subscribe to our NewslettersThe National Weather Service issued a statement from the vicinity of the London-Corbin Airport, indicating that they observedEF-3 level destruction in areas close to and west of the airport within portions of Laurel County.
That's when the footage revealed airplanes flipping over and being thrown around by those gusts.
The surveys will extend over multiple days prior to the NWS reaching a definitive decision. Teams will assess all the destruction, including rooftops removed from homes and houses detached from their foundations, which will provide indications of the intensity of the winds in those regions.
At present, it appears as though a single intense tornado swept through the region; however, teams will also search for indications that the tornado might have briefly dissipated and then possibly returned to the ground.
The NWS in Jackson, Kentucky mentioned that it will probably take until mid-week for them to complete their report.
