Hearts Ache as Abilene's Pioneer Pathways Learning Center Prepares for Goodbye

ABILENE, Texas ( KTAB/KRBC ) — A daycare center in Abilene that has been serving the local community for many years has decided to shut down. Pioneer Pathways Learning Center recently informed parents via a letter about their choice to close. Pioneer Drive Deacon Sparky Dean of the Baptist Church stated that making this choice was difficult.

"This issue has been under debate for many years now. Every year, we review each program thoroughly to assess their performance. Making this choice was extremely difficult. Multiple committees participated in this process involving numerous individuals. We ultimately concluded that the local market in Abilene isn’t viable due to the high density of daycare centers compared to the relatively small population of children," clarified Dean.

Another daycare in Abilene will be shutting down permanently after more than three decades.

Dean mentioned that the decrease in student numbers led to closing down the place. Following the COVID-19 outbreak, he observed fewer children attending. It pained him to witness this beloved daycare center from the '70s begin winding down operations come August 15, 2025.

"Prices have become extremely high, and we simply cannot continue passing those costs onto the parents and children. The church has begun subsidizing the daycare expenses," he shared. "Each year comes with a set budget which keeps increasing. Currently, we're slightly past midway through the year, but our spending for this particular category alone is already $123,000 above what was allocated. This is only one among several issues we face," elaborated Dean.

Approximately 100 students, 85 families, and 25 staff members are affected by this closure. The dean also mentioned that the church is taking steps to make sure everybody receives care prior to shutting down permanently later this year.

"Our hearts are heavy because we have to take these steps. However, we aimed to simplify things by setting an end date of August 15th. It’s not happening today, nor tomorrow, nor even this week, so that parents can explore alternatives. Our congregation is considering various options for those affected, including the children and our beloved staff members," Dean explained further.

Abilene daycare unexpectedly shuts down, blaming staff shortages.

Parents in Abilene have voiced worries over the steep expenses associated with childcare and the long waiting lists. These recent closures have further solidified their choice to remain at home instead of using conventional childcare services.

It can be difficult to listen to this situation. Particularly for working mothers without the choice to become full-time homemakers, I believe it places them in a challenging spot," said Abilene resident Ashlyn Wise. "When these moms look around, they realize that Abilene has limited choices available as it is. With two more closing down, I wonder where they will turn.

"We figured it's actually cheaper to stay at home with the children regardless, since you might end up getting either a part-time job or take on a second full-time position, and then all your earnings would go towards paying for childcare," explained Abilene mom Sonya Sisneros.

In Abilene, where daycare has become commonplace for numerous families, Dean points out that for certain households, these facilities are not just places they attended as children but also ones where they later brought up their own offspring.

"If you inquire with anyone from Abilene, they will tell you how much they cherished Beverly Allen; she was their key figure. My grandchildren passed through Pioneer Drive Elementary School. Our family includes children, grandparents, and even great-grandparents who studied there at Pioneer Drive. Everyone recognizes Miss Bell, and thus when considering this matter collectively, many individuals feel deeply affected. However, numerous prayers and heartfelt emotions have been invested in reaching this conclusion," clarified Dean.

Although the full-time daycare center will shut down, Dean mentioned that the Children’s Day Out Program will proceed unaffected.

Summer Food Program Launches in Daviess County

In Daviess County, Kentucky (WFIE), officials from the Daviess County Public Schools are taking steps to ensure that children won't face hunger during the summertime. Their second yearly Summer Feeding Kickoff event was held on Friday. The event included complimentary lunches for children and their families, along with outdoor activities such as games and balloon artistry. Additionally, children had the opportunity to receive free board games which they could retain for keeps. This marks the start of the DCPS Summer Feeding Program. Connie-Beth Fillman, who serves as the Food Service Director for DCPS, addressed the importance of the occasion.
